Field Settings
The field editor groups its options into sections that appear in a fixed order: Basics, then Properties (and Dehydration and Hydration for text-heavy types), then Foreign Key where supported, then Advanced. This reference covers the settings shared across types; type-specific options are listed in Field types.
Editing fields in the UI requires an application where your role has admin or limited admin access. The same settings are available through the REST API; see the Fields endpoint reference.
Basics
Present on every type:
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Field Name | The field's name (required) |
| Field Type | The type dropdown; all 21 types are offered, so the form rebuilds around your selection |
| Required | The field must have a value before a record can be saved |
| Unique | No two records can share the same value |
| Default Value | The value pre-filled when adding a new record |
Exceptions:
- Date, Date/Time, and Time of Day add Default to Now; checking it hides and disables Default Value.
- Lookup, Summary, and Report fields have only Field Name and Field Type in Basics (their values are derived, so required, unique, and default don't apply).
Properties
The Properties section holds a type's general options: display formats, lengths, choices, and similar behavior controls. It doesn't appear on every type (for example, Email Address and Phone Number have none). See Field types for the full per-type list.
Advanced
Present on most types:
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Reportable | The field can be used in report aggregations and summaries |
| Searchable | The field is included when searching the table |
| Copy Value when Copying a Record | The field's value is carried over when a user copies a record |
| Help Text | Guidance shown to users when entering data |
Exceptions: File, Formula, Lookup, and Summary omit Copy Value; Report shows only Reportable and Help Text.
Foreign Key
Most types include a Foreign Key section that turns the field into a relationship to another table. Enable Is Foreign Key and the rest of the section appears:
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Table Name | The related table (required) |
| Field Name | The field on the related table to reference (required) |
| Data Entry Field | An optional proxy field used for data entry |
| Autoselect value when only one option in dropdown | Picks the sole option automatically when the dropdown has one choice |
| Foreign Key Query | A query that limits which related records are offered |
Types without a Foreign Key section: Checkbox, File, Report, and Rich Text.
Dehydration and Hydration
Rich Text and Text Multi-Line fields can move their long-form content out of the table's primary storage. Enable Dehydration / Hydration turns this on; the Dehydration Query field then appears and holds the query used to move the data.
Visibility of settings
Some settings only appear once a related option is chosen:
- Barcode Format appears when Text (or a formula returning text) displays as a Barcode.
- Currency appears when Number displays as Currency; Max Rating appears when it displays as Rating; Auto Increment appears for Number and Simple Number.
- Separator appears on Text Multi-Choice when Multiple is on, and on Summary fields when the function is Concat.
- File thumbnail options appear once Display Thumbnail is checked.
Duplicate, edit, and delete
- The duplicate icon in the field list copies a field as "Copy of" followed by its name.
- The pencil icon opens the field editor.
- Delete requires typing
delete fieldto confirm. Deletions are blocked while dependent formula, lookup, or summary fields reference the field.
