Add a Field

This page walks through adding fields to a table. When you're done the new columns will appear in the table's records grid, forms, and reports.

Steps

  1. Open the table's Settings and look under the Structure panel, then click Fields to see the field list.

  2. Click Add Field in the top-right corner.

  3. Enter a Field Name and select a Field Type. As soon as you pick a type, the form expands with that type's settings.

  4. Configure the settings you need. At minimum, most types offer:

    • Required: the field must have a value before a record can be saved.
    • Unique: no two records can share the same value.
    • Default Value: the value pre-filled when adding a new record.
  5. Click Save. The field appears in the field list and becomes available on forms and reports.

Which settings appear depends on the type you chose. Check the field types reference for what each type offers, and the field settings reference for what the common settings do.

Adding several fields at once

Click Add Fields next to Add Field to open the quick-add dialog. It starts with five blank rows, each with a field name and a type dropdown, which is handy for sketching out a table's structure. Only the name and type can be set here; fine-tune each field's settings afterwards by editing it. Click Add Fields when you're done.

Tips

  • Every field type includes a Field Type dropdown of its own, so you can change a field's type later. High Systems handles the data migration, but check that existing values convert cleanly before switching a field that already holds records.
  • Most field types have a Foreign Key section, which turns the field into a relationship to another table. Enable it when you want the field to reference records from a different table.
  • Duplicate a similar field instead of starting over: use the duplicate icon in the field list, then edit the copy.

Where to go next

The same field management is available through the REST API. See the Fields endpoint reference.
